250th medal to be awarded
Hoorn (LEN) – Since the inauguration of Open Water Swimming to the official programme of the European Championships in 1989 – then as a separate event held in Stari Grad (Yugoslavia) – altogether 245 medals have been awarded. Thus at the European Championships in Hoorn the 250th medal will be handed over to the silver medallist in the men’s 10 km event.
Till date Italy clinched the most medals, 56 (22 of them in gold), followed by Germany with one less (18 gold), then came Russia with 36 (15 gold). Altogether 17 of the 52 LEN member federations have grabbed at least one medal in this discipline since 1989
Three Europeans in three months in the Netherlands
With the European Open Water Swimming Championships being staged in the city of Hoorn, the Royal Dutch Swimming Federation (KNZB) kicks off a great series of three European Championships, held within three months.
After the seven-event meet in Hoorn on 10-14 July, the KNZB will host the European U19 Junior Water Polo Championships for Men and Women parallel in two cities. The 16 men teams will play in Alphen from 11 to 18 September. One day earlier the women’s tournament with 17 teams will start in Den Haag.
