BCN 2018 – Russia almost equals the Netherlands’ scoring record

Russia was just two goals away from equalling the Netherlands’ single game scoring record in the history of the Europeans when they defeated Turkey 35-4 here in Barcelona. The record was set in the first edition of the women’s Europeans in Oslo 1985 when the Dutch beat Sweden 37-1. This was the first time since that match 33 years ago, though, when a team managed to go over 30 goals – 29 were the second best effort so far. Apparently, Russia did that damage to Turkey two years ago (29-0) and Spain netted the same amount against Croatia. The Croats were also part of a bad 29-goal beating in 2010, by the Greeks.

The men are yet to go over 30 – among them 28 goals are the most one team managed to score in the history of the Europeans. Spain blew the Brits away in Athens 1991. The world record is far, however: Yugoslavia beat Guatemala 62-0 in the men’s tournament at the 1985 Universiade in Kobe (JPN).
