Portugal v Russia 5-21 Day 3, Women, Group A
Miguel Pires, head coach, Portugal
Congratulations to the Russians and to my players. They improved from the last match and I think we will improve on every match because we gain a lot of experience playing against these teams and these players. The Russian team is very strong and experienced in this kind of competition. We tried to improve our defense from the last match and I think we did that. We could stop lots of attacks from the Russian team.
Alexander Gaidukov, head coach, Russia
We started very well. The main test was to control the contacts. The test was ok. The next game against Greece will be a very important one for my team. We hope we play much better against them. We played against Greece two months ago in the World League. We know them very good their tactic and players. We hope, we play much better in the defense. That would be very important for us because five goals against Portugal today were too much for us.
Mariana Sarmenta, captain Portugal
We take these first four matches as preparation for the real competiton for us which is probably with Turkey. We are fighting for the best result as possible. We know it wont be easy because these first four teams are very strong, having won European and World Championships as well as Olympics.
Ekaterina Prokofyeva, captain Russia
It was not such a difficult game for us. A main task was just to realize our moments in the game. We came to this tournament just to win because of the opportunity to qualify for the Olympics in Rio. So we have many expectations.
